  6. The USA National Championship is the strongest and most prestigious round
  7. robin tournament held every year in America. By invitation only.

  9. At the 42nd edition in Modesto, California, 14 top players vied for the
  10. crown and a $30,000 prize fund sponsored by Interplay. Three were
  11. deadlocked at 8.5- 4.5: Patrick Wolff, 27, Nick deFirmian, 38, and
  12. Alexander Ivanov, 39. They each took home $4850, but Wolff won a speed
  13. playoff to break the tie.

  15. Alex Yermolinsky, the World Open titleholder, trailed at 8 followed by
  16. defending champ Boris Gulko at 7.5 while 6-time national champ Walter
  17. Browne broke even at 6.5.

  19. Eight others posted minus scores. For the first time in over 30 years
  20. only one player under 30 -- Wolff -- was in the top ten. Teenager Joshua
  21. Waitzkin, whose story was dramatized in the movie "Searching for Bobby
  22. Fischer," had a dismal finish at 5-8 (2 wins, 5 losses, 6 draws).

  24. Wolff, an aide to challenger Anand in the recent PCA match with Kasparov,
  25. first won the title in 1992. This time fortune smiled on him in the very
  26. first round against Browne, 47, who was two pawns ahead but lost a simple
  27. endgame that was impossible to lose. What happened?

  31. "I underestimated Wolff's attack after he surprised me with a pawn
  32. sacrifice on move 9. Later if 23...Rxe7? 24 Rd8 Kf7 25 Ne5 mate," said
  33. Browne. "I think he missed some chances along the way but I felt okay
  34. after 26...Ra2. Wolff thought for 40 minutes on 42 Rc2! which was the
  35. best way to save his game. I knew I couldn't win despite the extra pawns
  36. and was going to offer a draw but said to myself maybe he'll blunder. I
  37. also knew I couldn't lose, so I decided to press for a few more moves
  38. until the time control at move 60. Instead I made my worst blunder ever.
  39. I let up my guard for a second and fell for a one- move cheapo after
  40. trying to avoid a draw by 55...Rxh3 56 Rxh3 Kxh3 57 Kf2 g4 58 Be5. Egad!
  41. I wasn't even short of time because I still had three minutes left at the
  42. end. I guess it was just fatigue."

  44. It cost Browne a Rook by 56...g4 57 hxg4 Kxg4 58 Rxh1 to avert the
  45. devastating threat of 56 Rf6 mate. Disgusted, he threw in the towel.
